**Slingers** tips & tricks
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:06:52 AM »

Any fast bowling slingers on the forum?

I sling the ball, I find it a difficult action to get right each ball for a long spell...there is a lot of things that can go wrong.

The positioning of the ball before release, angle and point of release are all imperative to a good delivery. It's the difference to whether you can make the ball rise sharply off a length or if it screams down leg side for byes.

Another problem you can encounter is how you twist your body in a safe way to get side on enough to generate enough power to sling the ball. Position of your head,  feet etc;

If you have any tips or tricks or just want to discuss the art of sling post here.

Whether you like Thommo or Malinga fast bowlers with such a different sort of action sure draw attention.

The anticipation of him emerging from the pavilion, and his walk from the boundary to the centre, is almost surreal. The sound of a passionate Indian crowd all chanting "Sachin, Sachin" as they wait in anticipation, followed by the enormous roar when he emerges onto the field, is electrifying.

I'm a slow slinger....

I fire the ball down leg if not warmed up properly so that's my first task in the field, get warm and keep warm as I usually bowl the last 12 overs from one end but it the others are taking stick could come on earlier.  I think this is due to not being able to move freely enough when cold.

I have a very upright stance at the point of release and this generates good bounce and makes it harder for the batsman to pick the length. I used to bowl with a low arm but have changed my action to improve the consistency. Tend to bowl out swing and off cutters but can bowl in swing if I come in chest on.

I find the best way to stay consistent and in control is to make sure you are not over straining when running in, keep the action relaxed and easy.

talisman....how far back does your arm go? And do you keep it close to your body like Tait or far away like Malinga?

I agree with your point of being upright for bounce I get the best carry through that way.

Sometimes I tend to strain too much for pace but when I keep it smooth it creates a bit of trouble.

More like Tait, only in slo-mo.....

I used to sling with a wide low arm but it was only bad when trying too hard.

Was a very quick back in the day however I'm now more medium quick but i find each person has a different action which i as a coach would try and work with. We all cant bowl with the same action as some of the pros have and we are not all side on either. Head position for me is very important on the point of delivery which can force the ball wide down leg side or wide outside the off stump.

If you fall away at the point of delivery that also forces the ball away from the intended place again head position could be the reason you fall away. The left arm if your a right arm bowler also plays an important part and feel it can be the main problem for many bowlers, most cases i go for a high left arm which keeps you tall at the point of delivery but again depending on your action.

Also players find it difficult to get side on enough at the point of delivery, a coaching tip i picked up many years back from a former Australian bowler was to introduce a jump into the delivery stride which worked for me and a lot of people I've coached since.  I could go on for ever and a day but best not before everyone falls a sleep.

Nearly 14 thousand runs (37 hundreds) at First Class level doesn't indicate attrocius batting... also nearly 2000 ODI runs.
