My club are in need of a final cut wicket mower and as newly elected treasurer of said club it has fallen on me and the grounds men to sort. I admit to having next to no knowledge on the subject and am getting little assistance other than it needs to cut short from the grounds men!

I'm after advice on what to get, any brands to go for/avoid, what length of cut I should be looking for and anything else you think will help.

I've left out budget as at the minute I don't know how much the club are happy to part with, I know this is probably a large factor in the equation but want to educate myself a bit before going back to the comittee.

Quick question are you looking for a wicket mower or square mower as the Dennis mowers have cartridges that pull out so it will work as a wicket mower as well as a square mower and it will work as a scarifier as well

Ransomes Matador are decent mowers & wont break the bank. I know Durham CCC use these on the wickets

We are just after a wicket mower I think, we have a few (ransomes possibly?) that can do the square but aren't good enough for the final cut.

AH.. a subject I know something about.

If your after a good old mower then you can not beat a reconditioned Ransomes Auto-Certes, or the newer Super Certes.

My Groundsmen mentor loves his Lloyds Paladin (he thinks the sun shines out of its ........ )

Now it depends on your budget. I picked up two good Auto-Certes up for �150 each off of Ebay then had them rebuilt which cost me �400 each. But they are now like new and cut like a dream.

You can get a secondhand Lloyds Paladin for �600-�700.

If your after just a fine cut mower and not a multi-purpose square mower, and you are on a limited budget but you still want a new mower then a Protea Mowers are good value. They are only good for the fine cut!!!!!!

However if budge is not a problem then a new Dennis, Lloyds or Ransomes all make good fine cut mowers

The Ransomes Matador is more of a Square mower, with less cutting blade and is no where as good as the above.

Thanks for that guys. I'm 90% certain we already have a ransomes Certes auto looking at the link you've posted. I used it when putting the wicket to bed although it kept breaking on me! Sounds like we might be better off getting it refurbished rather than purchasing a new one. We have 4 that are all non runners of some kind. I will have to find out what make they are as if we have 4 of those ransomes they are worth saving.

definitely worth finding out what you already have.

getting a ransomes auto/ super certes fixed will be cheaper then buying a new mower and will do a good job on the wicket. plenty of clubs use such a mower
