KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL, if you run in too far maybe hold your run and then you can run in and adjust rather than have to dive backwards and off balance. Never, ever take your eye off the ball though.

Colesy has it spot on you gotta keep your eye on the ball right into your hands.

The best advice i can offer is getting a pal with a tenis racket and ball to hit some high ones for you, this will be higher than a pal on a cricket bat n ball.  Although tennis balls can be hard to catch due to the bounce in them it would help you perfect timing your run and positional sense.  Also repeated catching wont hurt your hands as much with a tennis ball!

When you have perfected your positional sense the catching will be much easier.

Hope this helps

1.watch the ball
2.work out if you will have to catch it english or aussie style straight away
3.stay relaxed with soft hands!

If I could catch id offer some advice!

Personally always go for reversed hands rather than trying to take it below your eyeline with cupped hands. I find it easier to keep focused on that way. Perhaps using a windball would be a happy medium between cricket and tennis ball?

Iv got a rounders ball we fling about full pelt at each other before the game as it moves/swings in the air and isnt rock solid to get ur hands warmed up a lil.

timing is everything in cricket regardless of your chosen discipline, in the case of fielding it is crucial to make stops, take catches and throw accurately, the best way to improve timeing is to practice for long periods and perfect the tecnique before taking it in to a match situation, the perfect technique for catching should incorperate these fundemntals...

1) watching the bat from the bat in to the hands
2) getting in to the correct position early with soft hands ready to collect the ball
3) bringing the ball in to the chest in a cushioning motion, imagine having your hands out infront of you and bringing them in to the chest as you recieve the ball to make sure it is safe and not going to pop out!

start off by just throwing a ball up and catching it, you can do this anywhere and it is a perfect way to improve timing your catch, gradually increase the height and when you can consistantly catch your highest throws you should have cracked it... and remeber, never be scared of the ball, a sting on the hands is easily better than a day of regret in the field as the bloke youve just drops goes on to smash 100s of runs!

If you rush in you end up leaving yourself a lot to do when the ball gets to you. You can sprint forwards but only jog back.

I know this will sound simple but it helped me when I used to shell (drop) everything high at school, I tell myself to cross my little fingers so my hands are together, combined with similar advice to the above I improved a lot.

Our old coach made us catch eggs and if your hands were too "hard" the egg would break and you would get covered!

The biggest pieces of advice, and they sound simple, are to get your hands in position very early before taking it, to assess the flight of the ball before commiting to any movement (epsecially rushing in- nothing more embarrassing than it going over your head for 4!), and to try and relax once under it.

Great advice given by everyone here. I wrote an article regarding high catching; http://clubcricketer.wordpress.com/2010/01/28/5-golden-rules-of-catching/

Basically, compiles what everyone has said on here.
