We have guys who pick there matches    we pick next weeks team after the match giving the players who have played the first opportunity to play but if someone  Wants to play when when it suits them we accommodate them when we haven't got eleven from the previous  match which for us  is most  Saturdays.

I like this set up. Kinda "Winner stays on".

Only downside would be if someone was far better than other members but being kept out of the team because the XI keep turning up. On the other hand, it's good to know that you can choose to go away for a week knowing you're opening the door to someone else to get a run in the side.

Dispite having an excellent setup
Ours is a club where guys play as little or as many games that they want  we have never even able to  put the same team out two weeks in succession  come Thursday  the Captain is ringing round trying to get people interested in turning out we never know who's playing or how many till we turnup on match day not ideal but better than having no team or club.
