Little Chop of Horrors
« on: August 02, 2017, 05:04:55 PM »

I have been toying with the idea of customizing a bat to suit my needs, I wanted to use a bigger bat than my normal 2.7.  So I purchased a 2.10 XP70, then sent it off to have a long handle inserted and chopped it down to become a short blade.

pre-handle

 post-handle

tools of the trade

the result (on the right) next to my 2.7

How has the surgery changed/improved the performance of this bat? The bat speed is probably a lot faster than before. These XPs naturally have a very high swing velocity and it totally messed up my game. I thought about buying a 2-13 XP-80 and chopping down the toe by inch and a half.

Not to sure yet.  planning a net with it tomorrow.  For the pitches around me, which are slow and low the middle on the XP70's is a little to high, and the toe is a waste of wood. I could have got away with keeping the short handle and chopping 15mm to 20mm off. I will give it a go and see how I get on.

I did not reduce the overall weight, now 2.9 1/2

Jason
I've gone back to my Toro
It just suits the wickets and bowling down here

Pete batted with his h4l warbird on Saturday and looked a different batter.
I think it gives better value for shots, when there's no pace in the wicket/low bounce etc

And personally, you can generate more bat speed for the dead weight of the bat imo

Great work your highness

Did you think about keeping the standard handle length? It kind of makes sense to rehandle as I hate the thin GN Aus handles... was that a bit of the motivation for the swap too?

Ultra thin handles and thick blades (with bad pickup) seem to be the norm in most of the brands these days in aus, uk and subcontinent as well..Just hoping some day it ll turn around and we get good medium/thick handles and nice pickup.

Yeah
similar to h4l warbird/ Newbury kudos etc

I think the toe on mines about 40mm,(35mm) just measured it
toes squared off too, which I prefer nowadays

If your about, more than happy to let you have a go with it

Dan I was tempted to keep the short handle (I like the thin handles), but I thought I should do it right.  Pete (Hosk) gave me a Puma to practice on, and that still has a short handle. I only took 15mm off the bottom as I was a bit nervous, I used it last week in the nets and it was more than OK.
