Controlling Length
« on: August 30, 2017, 12:01:09 AM »

I've been bowling off-spin for about a year now, and am still no closer to being able to control my length.

In the last few weeks my line has been getting a lot better as I've read that I need to be more side on when I land on my back foot, but I still seem to be bowling full tosses or short balls too often.

I know it's hard to tell without seeing me bowl (will hopefully get footage soon) but is there any common reasons why I am so inconsistent with my length?

Many thanks fellas!

Not a spinner but I'd imagine that the old handkerchief in the length that you want to practice would help

Best way to improve your accuracy as a bowler isn't anything technical, it's to just bowl!

Go down the nets, mark where you want to pitch it and bowl at that area. :)

As a converted offie I had this problem and still do sometimes

Length is harder as a spinner as less room for error

slightly short and sits up slightly full and it becomes a full toss

I found my length varied on how hard I gripped or tried to spin the ball which affected my release point

I now bowl the first over see how its coming out on that pitch (some bounce more than others some keep lower some spin more etc) then adjust, I have found if I set the field right I prefer to bowl a full toss than bowl short as can cover it with right field so go fuller and loopier then tend to set on a good length when warmed up.

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

Work out the length you want to bowl in practice put a disc down and look to drop the ball on it in a match imagine there's a disc there.

Bob Woolmer's big book suggests it's all about keeping the head still (yes, bowling too!). But I've still not quite worked out how or why.

Our heads are heavy if  your head pulls away your front arm falls away in your action
Keep your head still and look at your target till you release the ball.

Another factor is the revs put on a ball . If you bowl two balls ,and everything else was equal, the one with more revs would likely pitch shorter , due to dip in its flight .
Similar for arm speed vs flight , top spin vs flight etc etc .
