Batting Video (Cricket Asylum)
« on: November 08, 2017, 10:24:32 PM »

Thought i'd share my batting video from Cricket Asylum today. Any advice is welcome!

For a bit of context:

I've been playing cricket for just under 2 years, having never picked up a bat before the age of 19.
Over which time i've averaged about 6 with the bat in the bottom Saturday division of our county, as i'm much more of a bowler.
The first clip in this video is from a few weeks ago, where i only realised upon filming that my hands were so far away from my body that my bat was not coming down anywhere near straight, so today's focus was on trying to correct that.

Things i know i still need to work on:

To stop going on the back foot to balls on a good enough length to drive.
To stop trying to whip anything down the legside.
Stand up taller in my stance to stop falling over as much
Stop defending balls outside off that i can leave alone
Stop hanging my bat at balls outside off

Strange that it was a Monty Panesar comment that made us realise we're both on here  :D

And it wasn't a thing of beauty watching me bat! Planning on coming back most weeks throughout the winter with the boys

Good to meet you!

Very impressed by this video for someone just playing a couple of years, well done.

you could well get lots of good advice about batting on this forum, there often is....

keep it simple and keep working. Balancing the head is key and can be done with practice and the right techinique for you. Not everyone does it the same way

For instance, some players can have a balanced head side on classical as we were taught in school years ago, some players need 'an assist' which may not be a side on position -it could be a trigger movement back and across, it could be a more open stance.

Keep practicing and good luck.

Carlo's not wrong, you look alright for a bowler who's played 2 years of cricket! I'd say two main things - firstly (as you mention) you defend a lot of balls that are missing the stumps by 2/3+ feet, which is a shot with only downsides. The actual defensive shots aren't bad at all, just keep it for when you need it.
Secondly, you're on the move a lot when you play attacking shots, either walking or turning as you play the shot. Compare the consistency of your defensive for which you're quite still as you play the ball to the consistency of the attacking shots where you're moving around all over the place as you play it. If you can stay nice and still in the same way when you're playing an attacking shot, you'll find you time those shots a lot more consistently. Can be a hard change to make for some people, but it's only a small change in theory which can bring you a whole lot more runs. Good way to work on it is to try and hold your position after you've played the shot. If you're falling over or needing to take a step after you've hit the ball, you're moving too much - target is a balanced position before and after you hit the ball. Think Ian Bell holding the pose for a camera after a cover drive.

Cheers guys!

Not sure why i'm defending balls outside off, normally i'm a good leaver of the ball in a real game! (Apart from the time i left one on middle stump  :( ) I think it was just being on a bowling machine wanting to feel bat on ball!

In terms of moving too much when i play attacking, im not entirely sure why i do it? Perhaps im trying to put too much power into it and throw myself off balance?

A good tip is try to practice similar to how you bat in a match, some people look to hit   the ball all the time and you're not really learning much unless that is your natural game.

Defensive shots need practice too cos if you get bowled a lot that won't change unless you work on defence. You won't find a really good batsman without a decent defence unless You are playing very low standard cricket.

Edge is quite right the lunge outside off may get you a single to third man or a 4 now and again but for risk and reward it's a no brainier- I would be leaving those until you can get yourself in a better position

Thought i'd post another video of batting in my thread.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34HTOFRblwU

Been doing some work with my mate on trying to make sure i get my head at the ball as when we looked back at the footage, my head and foot seems to automatically move towards the offside and close myself off so i cant access the ball on leg-side. I do it a lot on the bowling machine but seem to not close myself as much against bowlers (i think it's because i can read the ball a bit earlier) Excuse the crappy uni mats with no bounce

I also thought i'd add a video of my bowling. Spent the winter working on my action and it seems to be working now!

Hi, always good to post videos!
I think this may help you... https://youtu.be/Y3MZxTBr40Q

You are playing a little on the walk.

I definitely think a lot of my issues with walking into the ball comes from my lack of balance (due to multiple injuries on my already weaker right foot)

Thanks Buzz, i'll definitely put this into practice in the next few sessions!

i always try to keep my back foot on the ground but i seem to over-balance whenever i play a shot that isn't defensive!
