Should I expect more?
« on: May 31, 2018, 09:30:17 PM »

Hi everyone,

long time lurker but not a regular poster. Do not want to name the batmaker at this point as I am after some more opinions.

A younger clubmate has broken their bat - Below the splice, spine of the bat now hanging off being held by parts of the stickers much like the poor bat in this thread - http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=34440.msg542544#msg542544

The dreaded "reverse V" as they call it...

The bat itself was just under the year old mark at time of break but he is going through his exam period so it has now ticked over the year, we have sent the bat back to the manufacturer for inspection, obviously it is a RIP moment. Now the maker I know having brought plenty of kit from them over the past three or so years and had teammates buy their kit as well (this bat infact) have given me great service. But by the sounds of the phone call the young lad received today said "yes we can repair it but itll cost and wont be the same again (fair enough) or we can make a new one at full price".

Am I/we expecting too much to have thought the type of damage may have warranted some kind of replacement whether it be completely or at a discounted rate, I appreciate it is a difficult one as we are at the "One year warranty" but is it also fair wear and tear with this kind of break? Maybe I am used to the great above and beyond service they have offered in the past and I expected the same again.

Just wanted your thoughts? Can also add that the bat was fantastic whilst it was in one piece! Thank you for any advice.

Break during normal use? Post picture. Depends on brand and where got it from. If its sports direct cheap id bin it. being offered to make another one it sounds more expensive, id go back to them and say what you want ie make new one to replace the broken faulty bat, and state your expectation is a bat needs to be durable for normal use and not break unusually at the splice. If they dont agree, then name them so others can avoid, dont get another bat from them.

Tough one.. a year old bat “could” have seen thousands of balls, yes it’s easy to say it barely been used but a manufacturer has no way of knowing that.

Persaonlly the best i would be hoping for is a good will discount.....  not worth repairing, your going to buy another bat.. your team mates all like the brand and you are more than prepared to advocate it but there has to be some give and take.... or i may as well spend my money elsewhere....

After that it’s down to the maker and how much they value the customer and the potential business.

I’ve sold bats to team mates and seen how they treat them and then expect me to repair them / not get paid for them... its a bit of wood, wood breaks, there has to be some give and take.

Warrenties  up your at the goodwill or lack of  it from the manufacturer.
Some companies use there discretion offer a discount on a a new bat or free repair  others can't be  bothered.

Thank you for your responses! The bat isn't a Sports Direct special, I think the lad wishes it was though :( It is a from a UK batmaker.

I agree it is a tough one and yes we are over the years warranty. The break happened when he played a regular forward defence, strange noise looked down, large cracks running from the spine on both sides. I would understand the wear and tear point if it was a crack through the toe, some delamination, edge falling off etc. But I was wondering if this type of damage is unusual or a manufacturing fault as I haven't seen it happen a lot during my years on this forum (Where we go through bats every two weeks, maybe that is for other reasons though   :D...) or with my club.

I think I am relying too much on my past experience from the brand, they have dealt and helped me very well in the past with service and products so perhaps I expected too much this time around. Don't get me wrong I wasn't expecting a full replacement, but thought some kind of discount as goodwill given the break would be suitable.

Thank you for your thoughts, if anyone has any others they would be great to hear.

I'd give them a call and discuss it, most people are reasonable human beings :)
