Old style Masuri grill
« on: July 05, 2018, 09:22:13 PM »

Managed to pick up an old but unused Masuri lid off fleabay pretty cheap. The only thing is the grill seems really small (the helmet is a large) and the bottom of the grill is pretty much resting on the chin cup on the strap. Any idea why this is and could anyone help with an alternative grill?

Is it a test or elite grille style?

Test grille: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=old+masuri+helmet&client=safari&hl=en-gb&prmd=sivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwixmNb28ojcAhVLKMAKHUgSAhgQ_AUIEigC&biw=375&bih=553#imgrc=OAsY95dgafbfaM:

Elite grille: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=old+masuri+helmet&client=safari&hl=en-gb&prmd=sivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwixmNb28ojcAhVLKMAKHUgSAhgQ_AUIEigC&biw=375&bih=553#imgrc=j7T3hrZMR4iI9M:

From memory test grilles never came in a larger size, so a large shell would have a normal size grille on it, giving the appearance of being too small. When they released the newer elite style they extended the grille on the larger sizes which improved things a little.

In either case they were still too close to the chin/neck for modern standards and were on of the things looked at when redesigning helmets to meet the new bsi standard

Thanks jake, appreciate the info and mine looks to be the test one. I've really struggled with the visibilty on the new lids, having not played in while the last one I used was an Albion with an adjustable grill. I don't play to a high high standard with express quicks, so wanted to have greater vision hence the hunt for an old style lid. But the grill is uncomfortably close to the chin. Any ideas on how I could rectify this?

Not sure if there is enough space on the mounting plates to engineer some new holes and allow you to mount it further away. If not then you could play around with grilles from other brands, the best solution would be to find an elite grille in large if you can as the shells are identical. Difficult now though as it’s an obsolete model and people who’ve kept their old ones probably won’t want to sell

Thanks mate. Yeah I suppose anyone with the old style lid won't really have anything which they won't want to keep, but if anyone has... :D

I thought of looking at other brands to try their grills but difficult to just find the grill and also unsure if they'd fit, so can't really buy blind. Hmmmm..

If it helps I struggled with getting to grips with the reduced window in the new style lids, but I found that the GM lids seemed easier to look through, but I must have a long face or something - so had to go for a Masuri or a GN.  Also, concerned by my horsey good looks, I contacted Masuri directly and had a few convos with them - they can do specials ordered through official stockists where the grille is customised within certain metrics.  Not sure how that would work for you, but definitely worth dropping them an email or filling out their contact form on their website.

Thanks mate, might give that a go. I looked at maybe trying a GM Purist Pro adjustable one, but wasn't sure what they'd be like.

Out of interest I put the fixed grill from the new OS Test ll onto the old masuri and it actually fits quite nicely. It leaves a bigger gap too so visibility is better and it's not as close to the chin. I'd still be interested if anyone has other solutions or unwanted grills for sale though, as I could then flog the OS ll.

Where can we find older helmets which had a wider gap to see through

I picked up a new SS/Ton Elite cricket helmet up from Ebay (£25) and replaced the grill that came with it with an older style Masuri one (titanium). Much to my surprise it worked well. The new hybrid helmet has a fixed grill position and weighs only 700g. It's not compliant but I don't have to worry about that in two counties division 4  :)

Just need to find a supplier of old Masuri removable grills to keep me going for a few years.

Ebay has older style GM Purist ones available and the occasional used Masuri/Shrey etc with adjustable grills
