England to play four-day Ireland Test before 2019 Ashes series

England will play their first ever Test match against Ireland in July 2019, before the start of the Ashes series.

They begin the summer on 5 May with a Twenty20 international against Pakistan, followed by a five-match one-day international series, and then the World Cup starting on 30 May.

England face Ireland at Lord's in a four-day match from 24-27 July - their first Test of fewer than five days since the tour of New Zealand in 1971.

The Ashes series starts on 1 August.

Because of the World Cup, two Tests against Australia, at Old Trafford and the Oval, will be played in September. England will be seeking to regain the Ashes after they lost 4-0 down under this winter.

The series will also mark the start of the inaugural World Test Championship.

Ireland were awarded Test status in June 2017 and lost their inaugural match to Pakistan in May.

While I think it's great that England are playing against Ireland at Lord's, I think calling a 4 day game a Test is pushing it. This is nothing more than a glorified first class match, surely?

this may be the start of a different format thou, 4 days tests are being punted around to try, this is one of them.

personally I don't like the idea, I don't see how or why it's more atrractive than a 5 day test match, and if you like test cricket you like the format.

if you think tests are boring, then it's boring over 4 days too.

No I think England should consider it a bad job if it gets to the business end of day 4 but nevertheless there's a sense of pomp and circumstance with a Lord's test and I think that should be respected.

I can think of a worse idea!!!

I have friends in Ireland can guarantee they will come over and make a week of it. The Irish do support their teams brilliantly

If you look at the Summer as a whole it is 1 hell of a summer of cricket!
