Batting - how do you set yourself up
« on: November 21, 2018, 04:04:12 PM »

Folks, This is not often discussed in books/coaching - How do you set yourself up just before the ball is delivered, in other words, i believe every batsmen is set to look for a specific type of ball and then adjust from there - like Mike Hussey said in his videos that he sets up for the full ball (not sure which type of full - like good length full or half volley type full) and then if short, goes back, DeVilliers said he sets up for the good length ball and adjusts from there if fuller or short, so on.

On my side, i always set up for the half volley/yorker as I was most vulnerable for that earlier on when i started playing but I think that has hindered my game if the ball was shorter, making me delayed on my shot for the shorter balls. Want to know what do you guys follow/what works best for you. Or you don't set up for a specific type of ball at all and just look at ball and react. If I am not looking for any specific type of ball and just watch the ball and react, it didn't work well for me as I was being almost inactive.  So interested to know what you folks do and what works/doesn't work. Or if you just watch and react without any specific type of length in mind.

Cheers

Personally I try and watch and react, but I guess I sort of expect a good length and adjust accordingly - perhaps one of the very few ways I'm similar to AB.  We both also have eyebrows.  I remember seeing Ricky Ponting say he looked at a spot on the pitch that if the ball landed short of he would pull.  That's quite a good approach as well I reckon.  Honestly though, anything that works, I'll probably change before next season and again halfway through.

It would make sense to me though to set yourself up differently facing Morkel when compared to someone short and skiddy.

Watch and react.

Against quicks, I look to negate a good-length off-cutters and rest are scoring options. Why good-length off-cutters? Because if play watch-and-react against such a delivery, I usually get out lbw or bowled.

Don't think it matters really, so long as you're clear what you're doing.

I try to stay as relaxed as possible and fight to not premeditate.
Just watch the ball in the bowlers hand from mid way through his run up.

I plant my left foot to mid wicket and my right foot to mid off

I rest my bat on my right shoulder

And I scream at the bowler ‘YOU SHALL NOT PASS!’

Opening bat  facing the new ball Take middle stump  raised bat stay still head still eyes still  watch the ball out of the bowlers hand  onto the bat first movement everything in line covering off stump  pick line and length and hope the ball doesn't swing late  and I nick it.

Depends who’s bowling and what there doing.

Away swinging opener? Looking for it to be over pitched and it’s going over cover. To be fair even if it’s slightly short of a length it will still go.

The cut flick of the pads all come natural and the short ball just tends to be tooled intonleg side early on(not that much bouncers to high on pitches I play on)

In swinging opener? On drive is the shot, tends to be less aerial. Not as easy to ply if not over pitched. Lots more airing if there accurate.

Spinner, defend or milk, but keeping your eye on the bad ball. Anything short is being dispatched over cow or mid wicket.(hence why short grinders on shitnpitches always get me out).
Over pitched is back over the bowlers head.

Nothing better than an over pitched leggie to ease over cover.

I’m always looking to score. Mainly as the defensive shots are definitely my poorest shots.
