LH/SH/SB?
« on: February 11, 2019, 12:42:49 PM »

Apologies if there is already a thread on this...

I have a LB bat that seems to go well in the nets, but I usually use SH. Now people are talking a lot about using short blade bats. I'm not sure why short blade is likely to be better, especially for tall players. Do any pros use LH nowadays? This seems to be out of fashion... Is it all about the pickup, i.e. a LH bat is a bit unbalanced and picks up poorly? Why not use LB? Surely there's more wood and you're less likely to hit the splice and/or gloves from the shorter ball?

Long Handles don't pick up poorly per se, but there is a tendency for some players to hold them too near the splice, which negates the need for a long handle in the first place.  The wood does balance better for a LB though - especially in the hands of a talented bat maker.  I'd say for anyone six foot and over, they are a must.

I’m 6ft 4 and would say what ever you feel comfortable using.
My current match bats are SB’s, I get the logic behind all the options and feel like that’s what works for me.

you are welcome to try my short blade bats in the nets next time I'm there if you want to Si.
Both quite meaty bats though at about 2.12 ish but trust me you wont be disappointed!

Not there this Sunday but should be back on 24th if they are on.

Generally speaking if you hold the bat fairly low on the handle then LH won't work for you, and if you hold it higher up then LB can be a bit unwieldy even if well balanced. Short blades do make a lot of sense sometimes; they can use the available wood a bit better (if you're hitting it around the splice it really doesn't matter what size bat you're using - it's not going anywhere!), but do tend to be a bit more bottom heavy. Made right they feel like the middle is a bit longer and can definitely let you swing a bit more freely, I have seen some shockers though.

Personally, I think it depends as much on the individual bat as anything else. I've used pretty much any bat/handle length combo you could think of and like anything else there's been some bats I've loved and some I just couldn't get on with. One I made for myself last year that I really like is a 1/2" SB and 1" LH which is a nice best of both worlds if you're tall and hold the handle near the top.

Thanks for all the useful replies, and yes I may be around to try the SBs in the nets on 24th blindowl - thanks.

I have a new `NB 1260' from Fleabay that appears to be short blade. However, I really don't believe it is genuine given the very low price I paid (around £30) , even given the £299 rrp price label that the seller put on it (!). When questioned before purchase the seller said `friend sent it from India, think it's genuine but can't guarantee it'. Hope it's not a forum member, apols if so...
Haven't dared give it any net time yet in case it turns out to be one of those cheap veneered Kashmir copies (I don't think it is).

@Psi can you post some pictures of the New Balance?

If you want to verify a bats authenticity (or lack of) this is the place to ask  :)

Yes, will post pics later. But I bought it on the basis that it looked decent quality but was probably not genuine...

Here are pics of the 'NB 1260'.

It's 2lb12oz, appears to be Short Handle,
and knocks up nicely in the nets. Giveaways are that the workmanship on the splice is poor (looks worse after I applied some glue /sawdust yesterday), some grain flaws/knots, and swell on spine is a bit high. I am fairly confident that it is not one of those veneered Kashmir willow frauds...

The stickers are defo fake from eBay, the background was more of a hologram effect on the genuine version

Yep, good guess I think, although I was told it was sent from india. I will report back on how long it lasts and how it compares to the genuine (I believe) Mrf Kohli
