Does his technique not work? Against quicks? Steve Smith bats front on and he is piling runs like no one's business.

Yes. Being more open helps with the on drive and keeps you in a balanced position. Also stops you from tipping over when its swinging in.

Wont be booked for 50% of the time + cost of hiring nets etc. Then consider especially from october-december there is 0 work.

That assumes a 40 hour week, 52 weeks a year, and takes no expenses into account.

How many coaches can realistically do that?

What about off-side plays and cover drives? How do you shift weight/position?

Front on is a good model but when you have to play traditionally "side on" shots like drives to covers and off, it throws your balance off. How do you do it?

Correct, but it doesn't work when the ball is moving away, which is what most bowlers bowl. You've got to find a happy medium and being stupidly open doesn't work.

^ If you are outside the line (to the right of an outswinger pitched leg or mid-leg or even off but with narrow swing), you can play with straight bat or drive to extra-cover and mid-off. If the line is outside off and swinging away, it can be a pain to get to that ball. You can pre-meditate and stay side on for such lines and swings but it is guess work and a good bowler could then trap you with an in-swinger.

I think the reason it works for someone like Steve Smith is that his backfoot is practically outside off stump and reaching those away outswingers is easier for him.

The best coaches will work with what you have and not try to model all batsmen / bowlers the same. The principal to coaching is to improve your weakness and develop your strengths. Not everyone has the same physical attributes so how can you have everyone doing the same thing, if it were that easy there wouldn't be a game.

Look at Golf, all the pros you see on the TV and even those who have the same coach have different swings, this is due to the physical strengths of the player.

Coaching must begin with the basics, each year go back to them as you will have developed faults during the season, its the off season which prepares you for the season ahead during which it should only be fine tuning required.

I've worked with Damian @ DFCA a few times and would recommend, my club uses him in the off-season a few times each year and it's done wonders for quite a few players. Nice chap too. https://www.dfca.co.uk/

Trail and error, some coaches will be a good fit and some won’t. Not that they are bad, just different people need (and offer) different things. If you have plenty of options locally try and few on for size and see how you go.

Stay neutral as the ball is bowled. Lean in head and upper body forward of front pad. Then as you see the ball outside off turn the shoulder towards the line and take a comfortable stride towards the ball. Your front foot will go across. This should get you in a good position for the off drive.

Andy Stovold is as grumpy as ever!!! but is a great batting coach - he may be worth contacting/searching for - many of the people i've played with speak very highly of him

ive also heard many good things about Jon Solly in the area
