Thinking outside the box
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:03:49 PM »

I've decided that i'm going to undertake a DIY bat project. Ive thought up some new ideas, need to know how feasible they are, so got some questions to all you batmakers:)
First of all, would stiffening the blade improve the performance of the bat? Or is the splice/handle where most energy is lost?
Also, am i right in thinking that thicker middles/edges are for absorbing energy, inducing less vibrations, and do not in any way add to the trampoline effect?
Thanks!

What do you mean by stiffening the blade?
Energy is lost via the handle but also unwanted vibration.
Bigger edges increase the size of the sweet spot, but unless you have masses of spare wood to increase the edge size it needs to come from somewhere and that usually means concaving and less wood behind the middle means a less intense sweet spot. Get both thick edges and a big spine and you have got a winner, but usually a heavy bat or Pro bat.

i was thinking along the lines of inserting stiffening member to increase the stiffness of the bat, something like whats done in the m&h s6, but for a different purpose. and yeah i know bigger edges=bigger middle, but i wanted to know why that is, more volume of wood to absorb the impact? or general loss in the trampoline effect? Sorry I'm being very vague, but i dont really wont to blurt out my ideas before i make the bat! :p

The M&H S6 is strictly not match legal as it has 6 drilled and capped holes in the bat, nothing to increase stiffness.

You cannot insert anything into the bat, only the handle and that can only be 10% of the volume of the handle.

You are on the right lines about the volume of wood increasing the trampoline effect.

Yup i know the S6 is more to reduce weight, but i was thinking about inserting a piece of hardwood, ideally a T beam, into the bat. And it isn't match legal? I thought wood could be inserted, as long as it is not glued into place? And my initial thought was the trampoline effect did not necessarily change with the volume of wood, but with more volume the wood would absorb more energy, and therefore vibrate less...
