Learning resources
« on: November 15, 2019, 05:01:05 PM »

Hi all.

After making a few bats now and doing some refurbs/minor repairs, I'd like to keep pushing myself and gain further in depth knowledge of the skills and processes involved. So I wondered if anyone had any resource they've found useful, or knew anyone who could offer any advice to me at all or point me in thhe right direction? I've really loved doing the bats I've done so far and desperately want to develop further, but resources are limited and I appreciate batmakers have businesses to run, so it's difficult them to free up their time obviously for no personal gain.

That said if any batmakers want any free labour in return for some knowledge/tuition, or would be willing to help me out with any form of info, a PM would be well recieved. I obviously work but I'd happily work for free out of hours, or take days off from my work if there was an opportunity to expand my skillset and knowledge.

I appreciate any of the above could be a long shot, but as the old saying goes 'you don't ask, you don't get!'  :D

Keep it up, mate.

Shoot an email to Red Ink Cricket, a really nice chap and is one of the forum sponsors.

Yeah John's been great tbh, he's given me loads of advice. Just wondered if there were any other resources I could tap into. I'm just really keen to learn as much as I can  :D

There should be a college course on bat making!

Ha ha, I agree mate! I'd definitely pay for that. As I say a few people have been really helpful so far for free, which is really appreciated.

Something I’d absolutely love to do.  Have a local batmaker about 40 minutes away who produces good bats, I’ve had a few.  When I asked if I could watch/learn etc I was basically told they didn’t want to give away their secrets of pressing etc!  No wonder it’s a dying art in this country!!

Some time ago on here, I believe the retired owner of Fusion Cricket offered to train someone for free.  Not sure if anyone took him up on the offer??

In fairness I do understand their point and they have a business to run at the end of the day. However everyone at some stage gets a helping hand I suppose, so it would be great if that could happen. It may also be that the batmakers already do this for someone and can only do so much.
