I don't go in for getting square if a mistake has been made by me during a match and this does with some umpires make me a little unpopular. I don't believe in square ups. However given some of the stories I have heard from very senior umpires it happens at the highest of levels. hmmm.
So lesson Number 1 on umpire sledging.
It is nice if batsmen walk when they get a nick but I never believed in it so why should you. BUT when I was given out at any time I just walked off immediately without hesitation or looking back. You get a few your way and you lose a few over a career.
So up goes the appeal for a catch, and after consideration the umpire shakes his head.
Now batsman go ahead and sledge the umpire, tell someone in the other team that you nicked it. That means that the other team will immediately tell the umpire he is a moron on your say so. Even better stand at the other end after a few balls and shout out to the umpire that you did get a nick, make it clear that you think the umpire is a moron as well. Of course then come on to boards like this in amazement that you believe your team got a dodgey decision or two in the important final. Hmmm perhaps the umpire's network remembers.
As for the fielding team keep on all day about the decision. keep reminding everyone how you got robbed. Make it pleasant for everyone including the umpires.
So when someone from the fielding team asks if you got an edge or not just say the umpire was correct and get on with the job because if it continues the fielding team are now doing the sledging and guess who might be the ones to suffer.
As a by the way, I have seen top batsmen convinced they have got an edge when they have not and convinced they didn't when they did. Most batsmen have no clue what happens when the bat hits the ground at around the same time the ball passes or what happens when the bat tangles with the pad and the ball is close. So you can all take the decision and get on with the game or be a sledger and make it uncomfortable for everyone. Your choice.
