Bat Weight Optimisation

If you want to reduce the weight from a given bat profile, which one of the following is a better option:

Size of the edge
Size of spine
concaving
blade length

Surely all of the first three and arguably the fourth would make it a different profile? Just slightly smaller all over would be the way to keep the same profile at lower weights, a la B3.

so is it better to reduce all the three proportionately or better to give up edge vs spine/spine vs concaving/edge vs concaving ?

I'd say try thickening the handle and adding a counter weight before modifying the bat.

While increasing the weight, you're improving the pickup and that works for some.

Weight reductions in my opinion should be small changes to every dimension of the bat. Otherwise as Ed says you just change the profile and may as well buy a new bat.

The answer depends on why you want to reduce the weight in the first place. If you are looking at the bat picking up better then shaving weight from the bottom is the way to go. You would cut off the shoulders if you wanted the opposite.

I am getting a custom bat made and was looking at a profile, for the density of wood I cannot get it in the weight I want.

If I want the Tendulkar/TKC/Finch/Shan profile I cannot get it in 2lb8oz, so I am trying to figure out what is the best way to get the weight down.

Surely depends on how the bat is now and what you're hoping to achieve? If its got a very thick toe and you want to improve pick up, you can take some from the toe. If it's full with big edges and you just want to just make it lighter, you add some concaving etc without sacrificing edge size if this was something you want to keep.

If it is pure weight loss you want and don't want to alter the profile you can always drill out from the splice. That's what Hunts have been doing for years and it can remove about 2oz apparently.

Anyone had this done successfully with the toe of their bat? Got an absolute monster of a Kippax I haven't properly used yet but it picks up quite bottom heavy and wondering if this may be the way to go.

By the sound of the profiles you are looking at, seems like you could be looking for B3 to make the bat for you? Great choice if so!

Could you not just ask them to take a mm (Or as many as you like) off the dimensions of the bat? I think I remember Streaky saying that a mm off the bat was eqivalent to an ounce.

I haven’t had the discussion with them but wanted to get an opinion from the forum.

The Shan one was achieved with a shorter blade and long handle set up.
