No expert but I think by and large they have wings both sides making them bulkier and a little heavier.

I think the other way round. They wont have wings making them lighter.

Ambi pads got no wings or better yet, half wings both sides

Not quite the same but a while back I bought 2 RH sets of Ayrtek pads for some lads who were new to cricket. Really nice pads and I got them out a few times to admire them.

It was only when one of the lads was walking out to the middle that I noticed something wrong. The straps were pointing in the same direction. When putting them back I'd put the leading legs and rear legs together.
