I can't imagine that we are talking any real sums of money for a single-format player who hasn't made a convincing case for an extended international career.

You'd be surprised, I'm in negotiations with a number of agents currently. To give a guide, for a Div 1 county 1st choice keeper I'm being quoted between £5k - £6.5k plus "unlimited within reason" kit allowance.

Bearing in mind GN have dumped a lot of their pros (this one included) and the impacts of COVID are still well and truly prevalent. Any England player (especially a batsman) is getting 5 figures plus performance bonuses without even blinking an eyelid.

Also for what it's worth, the return from investing said money into social media/online advertising is undeniably better than any county pro, hence I still haven't taken on any county pros. If they're not playing internationals on Sky it just isn't worth it IMO.

random question and i hope you don't mind me asking (no worries if you do not want to answer as it may be too sensitive to answer)- but you're probably the best person on the forum to answer it and i've always been curious:

in your experience do the pro's you speak to want bats as part of kit deal?

i ask as it seems most want to have blanks made by the likes of kippax, keeley and everyone else (i.e. their favourites) and put the sponsors stickers on - as the only pro's i know where pros in the 1990s so most used the bats they were sponsored by (but the were all bowlers and not high level - as in they only got free kit - not paid) and it is obvious from reading on here from eagle eyed people that many are not using their sponsors' bats

thanks in advance

If you value the integrity of your brand you'd want a sponsored player to be using the bats you manufacture and sell to joe public otherwise you wouldnt have much faith in the product youre promoting.

All the Pros I've ever sponsored have used the bats I've provided to them as part of the deal. I've tried to limit my exposure by giving them a budget at RRP as to how much kit they can have any anything above this they start helping with costs on.

As Adam says, and from previous experience having sponsored county players over the years, unless they have a freak innings that gains (inter)national coverage (e.g. Napier's 152 from 58 balls in 2008 that prob saw a boom for Warsop in sales) then most county cricketers are grateful for free kit, you will pay for the higher ranking keepers and batsmen but from personal experience it wont cause a huge spike in sales.

@More Glue Than Wood - like Tom says it varies between pros with regards to their bats, some are quite happy using whatever they're given whereas some are VERY particular and only interested if their bat comes from a certain source - which I can totally respect as we all know cricket is a very mental game and you've got to be comfortable with your kit. Regardless of whether they'd want my own bats or want bats from their preferred source I'd still be footing the bill just to add (although ironically to buy a "pro grade" Keeley of this nature works out cheaper than providing my own pro players grade bats, but for the reasons Tom has given it just isn't something I'm comfortable with).

Unfortunately dealing with pros is getting harder and harder. Whilst I've had some really good discussions directly with the players (guys who have either approached me directly or been referred by mutual contacts), the second their agent steps in things just go rapidly downhill - most of these guys deal in multiple sports and have numerous sports men/women on their books, so they're only really interested in bleeding every penny out of you which just isn't my approach. Having worked in sales previously I'm very much clued up on the various sales tactics of these guys and they're certainly reading out the old textbook when it comes to negotiation.

I've had the same conversation with a lot of agents now, ultimately someone batting lower than 6/7 in the County Championship/T20 Blast is going to bring very little in way of exposure. If these guys were just looking for a reasonable amount of free kit then I'd more than likely invest in a couple just for the sake of saying you've got a few pros, but when they're seeking decent 4 figure sums it just doesn't make good business sense - ultimately I know I can invest that money into the strategy I've been following over the past few years and achieve a significantly higher return, both in terms of exposure and financials.

If the bigger brands want to spend their hard earned cash on someone who's going to be at the crease in less than 30% of T20 Blast games then be my guest :)
