505 v 808 pads and gloves
« on: June 19, 2022, 01:51:41 PM »

Afternoon all,

Looking for some advice re the quality difference in the above? Anyone got any experience of the difference between the two and whether the 808 is a lot better? For context I am wanting them to last as long as possible as I only play 3rds cricket but my current set are already (after 4 games) looking a little tired as they were only entry level.

Cheers

If budget isn’t a problem, 808 would be my choice. Fit, features and materials are worth the extra imo

Shop around and and you could probably get a less well-known brand's top of range for about the same price.

Hang around CBF long enough and you'll learn that most brands have their pads and gloves made in the same place(s).

I guess it depends how much you want to kid yourself you look like Ben Stokes?  ;)

I had a pair of 808 gloves, and having previously dealt in Original LE, they weren't great.

Thanks both, looking to homogenise my kit and got a GM bat at the moment which I can’t fault. I’d be more than happy to check out a forum sponsor or a smaller brand. From looking around however I’m not seeing a lot in the same price range as these.  I’m sure the same factories churn out all the sorts for all brands.

Any recommendations on more independent  brands?

Thanks

Neon Cricket - their budget friendly pads aren't too much more than the 808s - https://www.neoncricket.co.uk/collections/the-softs/products/hybrid-reserve-batting-pads

Really genuine guys to deal with, forum sponsors and there is a CBF discount code which knocks the price down a fair whack. Been using their top range softs for a while now and they've saved me from more than a few sore ones.

What is the CBF discount code? I remember seeing it somewhere but can't remember it.

You can definitely get a much better pad for that money on here. Red Ink often has lovely softs at a good price.

Thanks Jimbo - appreciate the words!

The CBF discount code is a simple one, just enter CBF! It's a 15% discount which would bring the Reserve's down to £72.24 which is roughly the same mark as the 808s looking briefly online

Also as a side note if you did want to stay with full GM kit - I'd definitely recommend spending the extra on 808s over 505s. The 505s are very much a budget option and I'd be surprised if they lasted long at all so better spending the extra few quid.

I really like my x2 pads from Red Ink (on the forum) the weight seems to be a little lighter than normal, with a traditional look which I like. Price is pretty good too, mid sixties
