I find it helps playing to leg as I don't "close" in my stance and block off leg side shots. With regards to not getting across to the off-side, it really depends on how exaggerated your stance is. If your back foot is further towards middle-off then it does help to compensate for a slightly open front foot, hopefully dragging your weight across as you play the shot.

with mr cricket, at times he has a slightly closed stance, but has a tendency to put balls on off peg and sometimes just outside off to the on side, if he doesn't mind me saying so! haha but i think most people have nailed it on the head Si, just open your stance a bit more!
