Top Hand
« on: April 14, 2010, 08:53:53 PM »

Last couple of net sessions one of the coach's has noticed that i'm to bottom handed and should me more top handed and let the top hand do all the work! Also that I seem to have my arms and bat close to my body and I seem to crouch when batting! Can anybody give me any tips on what could help me to avoid all 3 points.

I was thinking with the top hand situation might it help having an extra grip or less a grip etc etc.

Cheers for all the help

I find that too much bottom hand can come from gripping too tightly so to avoid this I add an extra grip (sometimes just half a grip for the bottom hand) or you can try wearing inners. If it's still not working then I tell myself to relax my grip as the bowler's running up. You can also practise playing shots with just the top hand - have someone drop a ball in front of you and hit it, swinging straight through with one hand. This way your top hand strengthens and you get used to it doing the work.

Not a couch but I know personally if im not upright I start to fall over which means I think balls are more leg side so play to the onside more meaning more bottom hand comes into play so may be worth get your allignment right before worrying about tophand bottomhand.

Try gripping with your bottom hand with just the thumb and forefinger.  Should automatically lead to the top hand being more dominant.

every cricketer is bottom handed, from village green to test arena, the difference is how late they bring the bottom hand in to play. Inzimam Ul Haq is a ver good example of this. Just relax and look to hit through the ball when playing your shots!

Hold your bat in your top hand outstretched for a few minutes, this will build strengths in your forearm.
