Few Questions For Batmakers!
« on: September 19, 2008, 04:08:51 PM »

Dont know where to put this but...
Just a few questions for the batmakers like Redback, ChrisE, Dynamite, Hell4leather, Bulldog and anyone else I left out! I`m sure a few people would like to find some out as well so add your own if you wish.

When did you start making bats?
How many do you make per day, week? and how long does it take you per bat?
Do you have another job?
Do you work on your own?
What made you get into making bats?

Thanks in advance

The 2nd question, some batmakers won't make a set amount of bats a day. They may well spend a day handling clefts and pressing, then the next day they'll finish the bats.

Cheers for that tom, but another one is...
How many bats will you shape per day, on average?

When did you start making bats? - I started making bats around about a year ago, i've always fancied it after seeing someone do it at one of the Test matches a good few years ago.

How many do you make per day, week? and how long does it take you per bat? - As i only do this part time I can usually get a bat made in a couple of nights after work, depending on what time i finish and what the missus has me doing around the house

Do you have another job? - I work for the local council as a Traffic Development Technician, pays the bills the batmaking just pays for my beer with the little profit I make on bats.

Do you work on your own?- I work on my own, its good to have some 'me time' without any interuptions

What made you get into making bats? - I fancied having a hobby which seemed to take off a little more than i thought it would.  Who'd have had thought this time last year i'd have my own brand, however small it is its great knowing that the few hours you've spent on a bat gives hours of pleasure for someone else

When did you start making bats?
Year 11 & 12 at school for my major proect in design and technology (2005/06?).
How many do you make per day, week? and how long does it take you per bat?
Im much the same as 'master Easby' ;), I fit it in where I can mainly in the evenings etc. As for prduction numbers etc like chris Im not really set up in that way,
Do you have another job?
I work in town at the main hardware store, then around this we have an enineering & fabrication business at home along with the farm (so busy, busy, busy!!!).
Do you work on your own?
Yes, Im like Harry Callaghan in alot of ways - partners seem to get in the way and end up in hospital or the morgue :P
What made you get into making bats?
Not sure what steered me that way initialy but ive always loved and played my cricket then the aformentioned school project set me up well and Ive continued to progress from there. Prior to this I had my eyes set on being either a Gunsmith or a Farmer (then the bottom fell out of agriculture). Im largely self taught with a little imput from a few makers ive talked to etc, but recently spent 2 weeks in Auckland NZ working under Chris Hext Farrant (Premier Bats) at Cricket Express which was absolutely brilliant. He is a living legend, but very few people know of him. Ultimately I aim to end up in the industry fulltime (wheather that entails serving an apprenticeship or not, i dont know)

Did you just go over to NZ mainly to learn more about batmaking?
Make any over there, or bring any home?
