Dowling for repairing bats

I have a bat thats cracked front to back through the toe but it's only gone ~80mm up, I was planning to drill it and glue in a bit of dowling but I wondered what the standard wood used for dowling bats was?

Bat's a fairly cheap (and old) CA so not worth sending off but I've done well with it so thought I'd give a DIY repair a go.

Any woodworking shop will sell hardwood dowel, which is what you require. 6mm dowel is what I use.

Any hardwood in particular, I've got mahogany ones in various sizes kicking about but not much else.

I reckoned somehwere between 5 and 10mm would be about right so cheers for the advice.
