Pick Up
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:59:09 PM »

I wanted to know that does a long handle makes pick up lighter ? Actually I am in discussion with a friend over a pickup so it is a low sweetspot bat (Luna LE) and at the moment we are getting it in Short Handle however the discussion is that does long handle has anything to do with pickup ? (Eg makes it lighter, heavier etc if so then why)

Thanks

Pardon me if it is a dumb question

Generally for the same blade a long handle will make pick up feel heavier as the centre of mass is further from the pivot.  Simple levers really.

Would imagine a long handle would make it pick up heavier, that is if you adjusted your grip further up the longer handle.

i would assume your hand positions would come into it...

if you were to hold the bat in the exact same spot on th lh as you would with the sh, im guessing it would pick up pretty similar......

i dont really see how it will help tbh

If you hold the handle relative to the blade in the same position, I suspect it will pick up ever so slightly lighter by virtue of having the top of the handle act as a counterbalance.

As Mike says it will depend on where you hold the bat. A long bladed bat will not pick up as well as a normal blade bat (simple pivot laws)

Typically if you are using a long blade bat you will be holding the bat further up the handle, thus it will be difficult for the pick up to be better. If you hold that bat right at the bottom of the handle technically it may pick up better, but the rest of the handle will get in the way of your shots and you might as well be using a shot handled bat anyway.

I don't think it is worth it going for the lh only to improve the pickup. You can put some tape IMO to make a counter weight handle.

If your hand positioning is low on the handle then I guess it would make the pickup lighter, as tim said about counterbalance. It's like having extra weight on your handle which in turn would make the bat feel lighter when you picked it up. For instance if you were to turn the bat around and hold it on the toe of the bat, it feels extremely light when you pickup the bat even though it weighs the same overall.
