Tips for someone who hasn't kept before.
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:14:23 PM »

Due to my ankle injury I'm thinking about taking the gloves for at least a couple of games until I can run properly again.

I'm one of the best fielders in my team and naturally a good fielder, however what tips would you give someone about keeping that hasn't kept before?

yeah i agree with buzz. you need to be fit to keep properly. alot of footwork is involved to cover the ground. maybe just rest up and give it time to heal

Keeping requires footwork so be careful as with all the bending it takes it's toll on your legs and ankles

But for tips keep low for as long as possible and keep your hands together

Wouldn't recommend it personally as you may have to take a few if it's a bad pitch - I wore one on the chin on Sunday :(

But as roco said keep low, hands together, bring the ball right in, rise with the ball when standing up. To be honest if you're standing up it's not too bad as you can get by with dodgy foot movements as it's mostly about hands I find.. :)
Hope that helps, personally I would take a couple of games out and rest, or alternatively field at slip if possible. You don't want to wreck your season mate :)

Yeah I would've sat out 3 to 4 weeks when I come back anyway, I tried to field slip last week however it still involved a lot of running/hobbling due our keeper not being the best anyway and I realised I wasn't ready to make a come back yet.

When I come back I'll also have a good ankle support, I just want to keep running down to a minimum really. It'll only be for a shorter format of the game, my ankle is on the mend - just in the final stages of strengthening really and the bowling isn't that quick at all.

Fair enough, so long as you're not planning on coming back gung-ho next week etc etc...
If the bowling isn't that quick I would suggest standing up as much as possible.
A. Because you'll stop the batsmen walking out of their crease if the bowling is quite slow.
B. Because it's far easier on your feet. Though the odd one can pop up so wear a lid of course :D

When you're keeping you have to move sideway's a fair bit, so you could easly go over on it again. I am a pretty good fielder and had to keep as our normal keeper was injured and I found it much easier as I had soft hands anyway, although your legs get a bit sore from squating all day. The first fill in I did we bowled for 86 overs straight, so I was (No Swearing Please) the next day.

Like to keep it simple. Can be made to sound very difficult. Catch the ball, eyes on the ball. All you need to worry about.
