Injured Shoulder!
« on: May 22, 2009, 10:21:21 AM »

Played last week and dived full length to stop a ball, did that but had this instant pain in my shoulder.  Lost instant range of movement and what i could move bloody hurt.  Carried on fielding and managed to bowl a few overs as it was my leading arm (took 3-14!!)

But been in great pain all this week, so finally bit the bullet and went to the Hosp.  I have a grade 2 AC Sprain, but I am gonna try and play cricket again tomoro as I am missing games later in the season.  Bit worried about doing it again!!

Anyone else had a similar injury, how long did it take to get fully back to normal

Cheers

Because of my whippy bowling action i have had quite a few shoulder issues, my left one in particular. I found with sprains they just take time to heal - taking pain killers, applying deap heat and maybe some anti-inflamatries will get you through the match but just delay the natural healing process. If you're playing once a week and training just once you will get enough time to recouperate. Injuries are of course subjective, and what one player calls a niggle, others will claim several weeks or months out for......it sound silly but mentally telling yourself it's not that bad has often helped me forget about it and just get on with bowling. If it's really bad after the match tomorrow don't train during the week and just rest it, unless of course you are playing a high standard and if this is the case i would suggest a one-off visit to a sports physio - they can give you some very useful advice and routines to aid the recovery.
This is just my opinion, and i am not saying this is gospel, but just my experience......as im sure more dedicated cricketers will tell me this attitude is wrong and will make things worse!

If you have anything wrong, or anything that concerns you a little bit, go to a sports physio and listen to their advice. If that means taking a month out then so be it, it means you will be playing a lot more in the long run. And if a physio gives you exercises, do them! Don't think a few massages is gonna make all the difference, its the exercises that are the key. Prevention is better than cure
