Interesting Bat-Making Article
« on: June 08, 2011, 08:03:20 AM »

Sir Geoffrey wouldn't have more than 6 grains? Mind you, I suppose it's hard to get many more grains than that on a stick of rhubarb!

For proper cricketers, choosing the right bat is much more important than life or death. Or at least they think it is, alone at the crease with only their demons for company as the bowler steams in to unleash a leather ball at their nether regions at 95mph.

Quote
Of course, a cynic might wonder how much difference a bit of sanding and weight redistribution makes to anyone’s game. Even Gasson admits that “bowing” – the current fad of bending the bat to give it an attractive curve – is “a bit of a gimmick”. The professionals, however, swear by it. They even use different bats for different forms of the game, many favouring a heavier variety for hitting out in 20:20. Extra weight can be added to the bottom for those who prefer driving off the front foot, or redistributed more evenly for those prone to hooking (there is nothing, sadly, to be done for those, like me, whose game focuses on hitting over cow corner)

A cynic might laugh at 2 of the big currents names being dropped, I guess that as they are paid to use their wares they are fully entitled to do so but if you get the chance to hear the private thoughts on GN and their efforts it might not be easy reading for the PR department. Also nicely suggested that all the bats are made in the factory, no hint of going where the labour is dirt cheap in India.

They're not lying. But it's a piece of PR - they're going to romanticise a little bit. Same in any business or industry.

Sadly true, style over substance in every avenue these days, PR rules business, but it all goes in cycles and quality and service will have their day again.

Interesting to see GN having an office in Pakistan, is something made there like bats, pads etc ?

Also if shock absorber rubbers are coming from Pakistan then Pakistani handles won't be of bad quality etc no ?

I've no idea why that is quoted since the bat handles are Indian and Pakistan could not sell to India?

GN have always had a presence in Pakistan through Grays of Cambridge (I'm surprised you did not see the factory when you visited Malik last year or the year before C_D).

GM grips are made in india.

Pakistan can sell to India Mike. (it's tricky but I have been doing it for a few years)
