Stay as low as possible for as long as possible. Watch the shot for both your own safety and an advantage of where the ball might go.

i used to field in short to our quicks and spinners. Stay low and watch the batsmen and nothing else, the backlift and feet movement give you a big idea of what is going on. Wear leg guards!!!
I must say i did prefer short leg than fielding short on the off side.

As been said the big key is to stay low and be brave with melons between your legs and you'll be fine

I have fielded there a few times. Stay low, watch the ball constantly if you see a big shot coming jump/duck protect the ribs, some people turn there back, and wear those shin pads!!. In my experience don't let it hit the bones. let it hit the more flabby bits of the body.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere (maybe on here!) that if you are fielding close in on the off-side then to jump if the ball is hit at you hard as batsmen generally try and keep it down on the off-side, and to duck if leg-side as batsmen will often not worry so much about keeping it down. Also don't turn your back - all your padding is on your front, box, shin pads, helmet protects front more than back, possibly chest guard - if you turn your back you are exposing more unprotected areas especially your neck.

Duck if they pull, jump if they sweep.
