Working on a new type of delivery
« on: June 22, 2011, 11:42:17 PM »

I'm playing around with my left arm spin and I'm trying to spin the ball out of the third finger in the opposite direction ie. a conventional left arm spinner will use his index finger to spin the ball anti-clockwise but I'm trying to spin it clockwise off the third finger. Big issue is trying avoid turning my wrist like a chinaman. Just wondered if anyone else has tried similar?

Never heard/tried it before - without rotating your wrist are you able to get many revs? Sounds a bit Carrom (sp?) -esque

not easy, biggest problems:-

1. Trying not to show the back of the hand and making it look like a chinaman
2. Trying to get my chubby third finger to rotate the ball without bringing the wrist into play
3. My orthadox finger spinning is alot flatter, I need this to be slightly slower and more flighted (no bad thing) in order to better disguise the difference.

Very much work in progress, but promising signs last night. Got real turn, though I don't know how much wrist was involved. Fairly consistent with the areas I'm landing it in. As a "surprise" ball against a village batter, it may work well. Key is really to disguise it better.

As an SLA myself, I've been bowling this sorta thing for a few months. I roll the index finger the opposite way to the way I normally spin it, and it holds its line/comes back in to the right hander. It gets picked occasionally, but it's fine picking it, playing it is a different matter. At my level it's dangerous, and has got me a few wickets this season, sometimes setting up for the (in a dream world) big-turning stock delivery!
