Close Season Bat Maintenance
« on: November 17, 2011, 11:08:54 AM »

What should I be doing to my bats over the close season to ensure that they are in top condition for next season? I have never really looked after them over the winter except for the occasional refurb.

I have the bats below, I am not going to send them to be refurbed and am happy to keep on the current scuff sheets, but is there anything else that I should be doing to them?

I have a tin of Salix Bat Wax. Would a couple of coats of this be good? If so, when should I do this and with the scuff sheets on should this just be on the back up to the splice?

my mate reckons keeping them in the garage is better because the house is too warm and will dry them out. any comments on this?

Kinda depends on the garage doesn't it?

so if I leave my bats propped up in the corner of my utility room all winter, away from the radiator, they should be ok?

You can store your bats in normal room temperature room (assuming average is around 23 degrees Celsius)

Leave the scuff sheet on, oil or wax the expose wood (just lightly) so two weeks prior to your season in 2012 re-wax/oil them (again lightly).

This is what I was told by worlds master bat maker Julian Millichamp

I keep mine in my room, partly because when I take them downstairs and shadow bat, my dad normally returns them back to my room when I've put them down lol.

Because my room is quite small, and new radiators installed, my room can get quite hot so I'll just oil them a few weeks before use. Should do the job.
