Just wanted to know what effect shaving 15-20mm off the toe of a bat would have on the performance/ balance.

The reason for the question is the im 1.7 meters tall and could get away with a 20mm shorter blade poss even 25mm to save on weight which could be put behind the middle.

That is basically the Mongoose COR3. If you buy one of them then yes, the principal works, less wood lower down more in the middle. They feel as balanced as a normal bat. You could get a bat custom made like this as well, or just get a heavy harrow bat made. If you did it to a normal SH bat after purchase it would be counter-productive to say the least.

Being short myself, I have always had my custom made bats made to Harrow length but using a full size blade. Which means I lose around half inch from the length of the blade meaning more meat in the blade for the same weight. Doesn't have anything affect on performance or pick up.

If you are talking about trimming the toe of a full size bat, this would lower the middle and reduce the weight of the bat. Have done this previous with a full size warsop and meant the weight went from 2.10 to around 2.08/09. Pick up didn't seem to different but middle was lowered.

Being 5'7 myself I got Matt from H4L to produce a harrow length/full width bat which is the way to go as the middle can be balanced for pickup. I have had a SH bat chopped by an inch off the toe by a professional batmaker and it does affect pickup a little. Even though you have reduced the overall length by an inch, the middle has moved an inch down towards the bottom of the bat. On a high middle bat such as a GM Flare or Icon I don't suppose it would matter and could help if you play on low bouncing decks. However, on a low middle bat you'd end up having a very large toe and poor pickup!
