Great idea... Or not?
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:34:58 AM »

Well, I was thinking, I could buy a CJI Fatso Limited Edition that weighs about 4lb. Then, get a saw and cut down the edge and make it into an amazing net / training bat! What do you think it would weigh?

it could work - but may be a false economy - if I were you I would just buy a training/middling/technique bat.

ive done this on a few older bats with damage on the edges/ toe edge. not sure its worth doing with a new bat but if you can find something used and heavy on ebay etc its worth doing.

Do any proper middling bats have 50mm edges? Most I've seen are about 40mm, also, they have cloth covers.

why do you care what the edge sizes are for a technique bat? it is for practicing getting into the right position!!
people have gone edge insane on this forum!
the only think that should matter is the weight - Ideally it needs to be as close to your match bat weight as possible.

I always wondered if it was worth cutting down an old bat and then using lead tape or something similar to take the weight back up to your normal.

But I don't think he's bothered about edge size for the reasons you think - a bat needs to be stupidly chunky to be, say, 2'10 at 2 or 3 inches wide, hence the fatso idea.

I mean, it's a stupid one, but not because he mentions edge size  ;)

What about just taping something heavy to the back of it, you can't be needing more then 7-8Oz, I'd think. Suppose it depends how thin a middling bat you're after.

My proper middling bat has 55mm edges, because it weighs 2lb 11oz and is therefore the proper weight for use in the nets. It also has no concaving, but then it is only 3 inches wide...

The CJI Fatso Kashmir bats only cost £20 so if you did buy a 4lb one and cut 3/4 of an inch off either side I reckon it would weigh in at about 2lb 14oz as you'd remove approximately 1/4 of its mass with a reduction in width of 1/3.

There are plenty of makers out there who can make a middling bat at the right weight for a sensible price. Myself and Pete picked up a very snazzy one the other day, weighed about 2.10, painted black, and only the face was willow. Don't know what the wood behind it was but it felt right and looked the business...

this is the edge of my middling bat - which is only 2lbs 3 - but useful never the less
