I'm normally one of the people saying things to put the batsman off in th field rather than being sledged at myself.

But as a bowler you can't beat a glare after a long follow through after a batsman has had a swipe and missed. No words need to be spoken

If someone glared at me in their follow-through I'd laugh

Walk out to do some gardening, see how much bottle the bowler has when you are doing this while keeping eye contact if he has a long stare at you with a long follow through

Having looked back at the posts in this thread it's quite easy to guess the relative ages of the posters! The younger members seem to think sledging is a part of the game (although I doubt any are playing at a level where it really is) and the older members seem to see sledging for what it is. An ugly part of the game that adds nothing but takes away a lot. Sledging is for pikeys...

Sledging doesn't work on anybody 30 and above with enough experience to know it's just talk. I've played against guys who have first class/minor county experience and after that some little inbred kid mouthing off in a 2nd XI village game really doesn't impress me.

It shows how hard some people play the game and at what sort of standard. The higher the so called standard, the more sledging you will encounter.
I do not see anything wrong in sledging, IF done in a right manner if that makes sense. There is an art to sledging, and when mastered, it is a useful weapon

Sledging (Merv Hughes aside!) shouldn't really be insulting. I see it as more a case of wit, and subtlety, than an insult!

If anything, I sledge/have banter with my teammates, helps team moral if you can joke with each other!
