Uzi in the runs.....
« on: April 02, 2012, 04:43:04 PM »

A little write up from the Somerset vs Cardiff MCCU.......a certain Qureshi making some runs, good to see!!!

Cardiff MCCU bat all day at Taunton Vale

Somerset spent a long day in the field at Taunton Vale where after being put into bat first Cardiff MCCU had moved onto 308 for five before bad light brough the day to a premature close.

Gemaal Hussain picked up an early with for the hosts when he had opener Will Jones caught by Nick Compton with the score on eight.

James Burke came into the attack for the 11th over and with his fourth delivery accounted for Hamza Siddique with the total on 32.

There was further joy for Somerset when Craig Meschede bowled skipper Andrew Balbirnie with the total on 61 in the 24th over.

The fall of the third wicket brought Uzair Qureshi to join opener Zac Elkin and by lunch the two had taken the students onto 94 without further loss.

Elkin and Qureshi added 96 runs together for the fourth wicket in 18.2 overs before the latter was run out by Pete Trego for 47.

Sam Davies joined Elkin and their fifth wicket stand was worth 87 before Burke claimed his second lbw decision of the day to remove Davies for 42 with the total on 244.

Elkin and Tom Friend remained together until the close by which time the Cardiff MCCU captain Elkin was unbeaten on 127 which came off 292 balls and included 15 fours, while Friend was 35 not out. For the hosts Burke ended the day with two for 51 off 14 overs.

At the end of the day Andy Hurry the Head Coach said: “It has been a challenging day for us and the Cardiff University boys have applied themselves really well and have got themselves into a position where they control the game.”

“Potentially they could bat on tomorrow and get a big first innings score or they might decide to declare but we will have to wait and see on that so when we have our opportunity we will have to judge the situation to try to set a game up on the final day.”

The Head Coach went on: “I am really pleased with how Craig Meschede bowled today and there were two first class wickets on debut for James Burke, which is really encouraging for us.”

He added: “The wicket is a little bit slow which is to be expected at this time of the year and they played and missed quite a number of times so all in all it has been a good day’s cricket.”

Pictured is James Burke who claimed two wickets on his debut.

Burke looks quite like a fast bowler but is a batter mainly, he could be one to watch, I'm sure Uzi will carry on progressing well, and he's a really nice lad to talk to as well.
