Does it still hurt?
« on: February 16, 2012, 12:15:56 AM »

Having had an unfortunate, hilarious (for some) accident today while practicing alone up the park with bat and ball (which has left me with a bloody, wonky nose), I came up with an interesting thought.
That REALLY hurt, blood everywhere. I've been hit whilst wearing a helmet, and that still hurt a fair bit, he wasn't that quick either. Now, I haven't tried these new-fangled Ayrtek helmets, nor the latest Masuri offerings- Does it still hurt when you get hit with them?
Personally, when batting I find that when I get hit, and it hurts, I have to starts the innings all over again- I lose all confidence, and begin to get nervy and edgy.
So- Ayrtekkers, and those who play at a higher level than me- does it still hurt? :)

I tend to find when batting some sort of 'Adrenaline' kicks in to cancel out some pain... For example for the first 4 games of last season I had Sciatica (Seriously painful, im sure anyone else who has had this will back me up!), and I would pretty much limp around in the field for 50 overs, and limp out to bat, but when getting forward and running between the wickets, the pain pretty much just went away.

I would imagine this would be the same if you got hit with a helmet on, you would be in shock for a while, and then the adrenaline would kick in and you would carry on... And be very painful/stiff in the morning!

Got hit 3 times in my Albion in a single season and none of them hurt, yes I felt each one but never in pain. Since I've had my Ayrtek I haven't been hit (touch wood)

Last time I got seriously sconned was wearing a cheap hunts county helmet versus a minor counties opening bowler. I wouldn't say it particularly hurt badly, but I was quite shaken up and a little disorientated

Aren't the Ayrtek lids designed to deflect the ball as opposed to take the full brunt of the ball? Hence the sloping peak  ???

Correct...I would think its always going to be an unpleasant experience but at least with our helmets we have proven that upto 3x less impact is felt by your head when inside the helmet.

I know if I got hit I'd want the safest option on my bonce!

Sounds nasty Ian, props to you for playing through that ! The adrenaline doesn't always kick in personally, only when playing well.
I guess it is more the disorganization I guess which gets me. So Tom, are the Ayrtek helmets designed around reducing the impact of the shaking of the brain internally instead? I've seen scans of the damage that can do. I might buy one of yours in the long term, I just can't put out £110 for a helmet atm.

Yes reduction in impact being felt by the head inside of the helmet, also the chin strap is designed to stop the helmet pivoting when compared to a one strap design and the shape of the shell to avoid it deforming upon impact.

I think the Premier helmets are around £75 for the steel and £99 for the Ti in the retailers if you have a look here....

ive been hit wearing a helmet by liam when i first got it,
hes not rappid but still it had a bit of bite as it hit the sports hall floor and not the mat.

tbh didnt really feel anything inside the lid as it hit the side and glanced off!

very good design tbh. and it didnt scuff the finish.

never taken one full on tho

Provided you're wearing a properly fitting, decent helmet, it shouldn't hurt too much. Generally I find that unless you get hit flush on the grille, the ball seems to slide off the helmet as opposed to "pinging" it.

It's still loud and a bit disorienting though, plus you'll cop some stick later :)

I have been hit on the helmet quite a few times. (always flush on the grille - New York has a lot of guys from Carribean islands and they always wanna bounce you out).
Its never hurts. Make sure your grille is far enough away from your cheeks, nose and Chin AND helmet is fairly strapped tight.
Grille makes a vibrating sound - you surely need half a minute to get yourself together again.
I always smile and say to myself - all is well - not a Monday morning dentist visit. LOL :)
