hand speed for cut shots
« on: April 01, 2012, 08:04:01 AM »

hey guys
i have been wondering what makes a good hand speed?for rocking onto the back foot and cutting powerfully?
is it a light bat, strong arms or good hand-eye co-ordination?
i have tried this shot in the nets and i missed them by a country mile both in timing and connecting..
i generally have a good eye and timing against fast bowling but seem to take my front foot too much across and reach the spinners..if it turns im screwed!
any advice would be much appreciated

mixture of all sorts of factors really.  The cut shot is a tough one to get right - especially if you're playing on poor wickets where variable bounce can be an additional complicating factor.  The usual stuff applies - lighter bat/higher middle supposedly helps (I've never had a problem cutting with a 3lb bottom heavy sleeper but there you go), good footwork is essential etc.

if you're missing the cut shot consistently you're in trouble, there are a lot of things that need to be considered, but make sure you watch the ball closely, dont try to hit it to hard, and make sure its not to close to you.

By the way its a back foot shot generally speaking so, not sure why the front foot is causing you a problem...?

the thing is the fact that i always get on the front foot for spinners and having to go back on the back foot for a short pitched delivery might be the cause to make me fail the cut shot..i'm guessing its a weight transfer and the time i have for it the issue..?

trigger movement too big making it difficult to adjust, particularly if you have to move across the crease to a wide short ball.

With regards to timing the ball against spinners. You need to play it as late as possible and concentrate on timing the ball not over hitting it.

Against spinners the key is not to fall away to le too early, you have to move back and across (or just back if its on line with the stumps) and literally just time it, most edges to the keeper are caused by trying to hit it too hard & too late, coupled with poor balance, with the CoG to far to the leg side.
