I doubt you do, it's a bit like a helmet I suppose. I'd be thinking that all gear is optional, obvs a bat is useful, as are pads, but if you are good enough to keep without pads then go ahead, but you compromise your safety I think... :|

In all fairness how many times do you see keepers getting hit in the shins?

They have gloves to catch the ball!!

 de villiers wore his pads underneath the other day in IPL too.

McCullum kept in one of his last games for Nz without pads when he was standing back, think it was southee bowling

Yeah only in Sub-Continent though. WOuldn't be much advantage over here.

Mccullum did the same in New Zealand against Pakistan. In ODIs he would take his pads off for the last 5-10 overs  (don't remember exactly) so that he could run and stop the byes and quick singles.
