Top edge to the chin, or the Ian Bell injury...
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:27:22 PM »

I'm surprised that no-one has brought this up, but Ian Bell would have been wearing a helmet when he top edged the ball into his chin. The helmet grille clearly hasn't stopped the ball, in fact, the ball seems to have completely missed it. This raises a couple of questions for me, but I wonder what others think.

The first is that I don't believe the grille position extends around under the chin enough. Certainly, my Ayrtek fits me better than either a Masuri or an Albion, and I do worry that an edge or sharp lifter would get to me due to the position relative to my chin. As our resident expert Tom, what's your view on this?

The second is whether, had he been wearing his Ayrtek, he would have suffered less damage...?

Perhaps if he was wearing his masuri correctly the damage would have been less. All of these injuries come from players not wearing helmets according to manufacturers instructions.

I'm sure Bell was wearing his Masuri properly.

However, chin is vulnerable area and it is exposed. I became friends with one of forum member, towson80 who have been hit on his chin few times so to avoid that he uses fielding grill.

The only protection to chin is really the chin strap, some area is still exposed.

Id say most cricketers will go through their careers never being hit on the chin, its quite a rare one.....

Guess if they added extra protection for the chin like the fielding grill it would make the grill get in the way of possibly your collar bone etc?

Wearing the chin cup on your chin is the correct way to wear any helmet, not dangling around your throat.

I didn't think he did have a lid on - I read he was just having TDs when it happened

Masuri have just launched a new design which should protect the chin more:

sorry only just seen this as been on the road for the last 2 days!

difficult to quantify as your natural reaction is to pull your head back away from the ball that may rear up off a length therefore exposing your throat and chin area due to this. We certainly tried to get our grille design to wrap around under the chin section as you have seen when we tweaked the angle to improve the fit on our newer grilles compared to our older version.

Without seeing actual footage of the incident its hard to see or point out what preventions could have been made to avoid it. If he had a chin cup on it would have softened the blow as they obviously have an element of padding to them, if he just had the chin strap under his jaw then it will have clocked him on the chin causing the cut.
