Match cancelled, but why?
« on: June 09, 2012, 08:54:20 AM »

Got told last night that the opposition have called off the game due to a water logged pitch. We have not had that much rain and it's been quite windy so I can't see it being waterlogged. Last week we had a game at the same ground as there are three pitches. So my question is where would we stand if I went to the ground and found that the other pitches were in use and our designated pitch was not waterlogged and totally fit for play? I'm really p'd off as I've woken to bright sunshine as well.

It would depend on your league rules, but you also have to bear in mind that you are not the groundsman...

Only brought it up because I'm aware of a similar thing happening already this season.

We recently challenged (with the league) a cancelled game as there were games being played on pitches next to the one we were due to play on, and were awarded the full win points and the team (that we suspected couldn't field a team) had a point deducted.

Thanks for that. I'm not too sure what our league are like with stuff like this but I'd hope we would get a similar result. I'm going down there later to check out the conditions. I'm more annoyed that I'm not playing than that they might be cheating.

From my experience if the game is in doubt then on the morning of the day we would ring up a local umpire who would cme and asses the area and make a decision.

This eliminates any wrong doing.

We called a game off on the Friday night a couple of weeks ago and that was because it was waterlogged and it saves a lot of time. Most times you can work hard on the ground all Saturday and wait until 5pm only for the game still to be called off. Believe me that is more annoying!

What puzzles me is that it is supposedly waterlogged. We have had no where near enough rain to water log it

Every ground is different. We hadn't had that much rain but it had waterlogged the grounds at my old club only 6 miles down the road they played a full game.
