Home Made Cricket Bat Mallet...
« on: July 31, 2012, 12:15:05 PM »

So i got a new full size lathe recently and thought id have a go a making a new bat mallet.

I started off with a block of hardwood and turned it down in to a mallet shape. Once sanded and waxed i then needed to start on the handle. I used an old handle i took out of a bat some time ago,The diameter was too big so i had to turn that down to suite. Once down to the correct diameter i drilled the hole in the mallet end. I thought it would be a good idea to bind the handle and add a grip too.

Anyway here are the pictures, since then Ive added a black chevron grip over the top and trimmed the top of the handle so its flush with the top of the mallet.

Looks nice mate, adding the grip was a nice touch. That should come standard on all mallets, darn thing keeps slipping especially when traces of linseed oil get on it.

i think alot of batmakers do this. i think you see it in the GM videos that they have grips on.

good effort by the way ryan. what lathe did you go for in the end?

I picked up a Myford ML8, my uncle found me a decent one. He loves going to the autojumble's, he re-furbed it for me so its like new  :D

I've got a drill chuck coming today so I'll be able to attach my pneumatic sanding drum to the outboard spindle. Should give me a better finish quicker.
