I joined a team last winter, though play in the 3rds (social type me!), and was asked to Umpire for the first XI last season. I couldn't actually do it on that occasion though.

Apparently it's 'the norm' for people in the lower teams to umpire - maybe only once season - on rotation, for the firsts.

Is this common?

Sounds to me like your First XI are taking themselves a bit too seriously! If they are still playing at a level whereby they can supply one of the umpires and he doesn't have to be qualified then why can't they supply one from their own XI?

Dan - there is a very easy solution to this!
Umpire for them and if one of your teammates close to being LBW, or any other close call - just give the decision in favour of the opposing team! And same with wides, no-balls, etc! Believe me, they will never ask you again!!

It's not the norm and they are taking the p***. Chances are they'll either get fined or have a points deduction, and they all want to play. Some teams are selfish like that and it's not always the 1st XI. As Pete says, do a really bad job and trigger your team. They'll never ask you again.

As a footnote - I strongly believe everybody should do a stint of umpiring if asked during a game. Nothing does my head in more than somebody saying "I don't know the laws", they are 35 and been playing for 20 years.

Yes, this applies for us, but if you umpire, you get the umpiring fee (�25 per game) so it's not a disaster...

- If the 1st XI need an umpire they should make themselves a first XII and rotate. They are not pro's, no better than us (batting average aside!) and their Saturday afternoons are certainly no more sacred than mine! Of course, should the first XI skip fancy umpiring one of our grim awaydays against a Village seniors team, it would help to open the debate

It just amazed me that this is/was accepted at out club (and all the 2nds and 3rds players don't question it!)

what club do you play at Dan? Which league?

I play for the same team as Dan W and actually did give up a saturday to umpire (gutting as I had a game rained off either side too!) but there's a reason why we have to have this....

Unfortunately the 1st XI had to supply an umpire (league rules) which isn't a playing member of the team. The simple answer would be to find someone who would bge willing to become our club umpire, now if anyone else here has ever tried doing this in London they would appreciate how hard it is, especially as a young team with no "Older" members who have retired from the game. Thankfully they got promoted and now have league supplied umpires....the bad news is that our 2's team now have to supply a non playing umpire - again league rules.

Another Key factor was that we asked the league to supply us with "Neutral umpires" on a few occasions, as they have a pool, we had them allocated a few times, and they promptly pulled out.....cheers.

If anyone can see a better solution I'd love to hear it as it was discussed at great length at our club AGM last night.....

I hope the first team will be willing to repay the favour and provide players to the second team now - that would only be fair...

Sorry skip...You probably have me down as a bit of a whinger now - it's really not the case mate! Just this one part of the game I don't agree with (you'll see how sparingly I can make it to your games - so you can appreciate I'd be averse to spending it umpiring!)

Cheers for the clarification tho, makes a bit more sense than an email blindly telling us it was our duty!

which club and league?

Regarding alternatives - talk to the umpires association. Quite often they have young umpires just passing exams and looking for a club. Alternatively just pay somebody. �30 is the going rate, stick it in the freeads. Plenty of semi-retired folk looking to make some pocket money.
