Keeping Help
« on: May 07, 2009, 05:42:37 PM »

Guys, I am keeping on saturday and need some guidance, i have kept indoor, and outside in friendlys, but this is a league game. We don't have anyone particularly quick in our team but we have people that move it around and some can be erratic at times. In indoor i have dropped some catches as they have some onto me quite quick. I prefer not to crouch all the way down.

I was just looking for some pointers when taking leg side, diving, standing up, taking balls that bounce before me and taking balls from the outfield

any help appreciated

thanks

im in the same boat as you liam, i'm keeping for my club seconds this week. i've kept in friendlies and the odd league game for the 3rds. the best thing i found is in every stuation, stay low for as long as possible! only come up as the ball is coming past the batsman

that should be fine as long as your head and hands are fairly low

Liam, when standing up -

1.  Keep as low as possible and come up with the ball, keep reminding yourself to do this, otherwise its easy to get lazy without realising!
2.  When going down the legside, keep low again. But make sure you move your head first then your feet.  This gives you much more chance of taking the ball.

Standing Back -

1.  Take the ball into your body and make sure of the take.

Not much I can say standing back, just make sure you watch the ball.

Not much i can offer also when taking in from the field, if people throw the half volley into you (which always happens!)  Have a go at them and they'll learn their lesson, they don't realise how hard that is to take, and how hard keeping is at times!

I would love to give you more pointers, however i've only kept two seasons and haven't had any coaching.

Your work out where your going wrong after a while matey.

Good luck.

Just basic stuff such as watch the ball at all times and on half volleys try and get your whole body behind the ball.

keeping to a higher team is usually easier i find, pace + bounce means you can stand further back, and don't normally have balls dying on you. basicaly my advice is:
Standing up: Make sure you have your weight forward on the balls of your feet, rise quickly with the bounce of the ball. so you can take any stumpings, and also try and resist the urge to step back as this will make catches harder. come up with the ball. Mark out off stump and then ( your foot, width of foot, then foot again) also mark this on leg stump, i can draw if you don't understand.

Throwing in: stay on your toes, and try to get the ball before the bounce, as the bounce just complicates things. nice soft hands,

Standing back, move your feet, and always try and take the ball in line with your head, and give lots of give

ive found that when standing back try to get to the far side of the ball ie if its on off stump get outside offstump to take it, gets your feet in the right place and gives you more area to give with the ball
