i would glue and put twine around the bottom about an inch above the toe with pva glue nice and tight go round about 4 times should be enough

But if you are going to dowell.
No you dont drill from 1 side through to the other, just measure the nearest edge to the crack and drill aprox an inch through the crack. i would personly put in two dowells one nearer the top and one lower down

Can anyone explain me how to use dowels in bat repairs??? or maybe someone have some pics of repairs with dowels can post them???

Once you have glued and set a broken piece back into position, you drill a hole or two (depending on size of broken piece) through the broken piece (usually from the edge of the broken piece) and the remainder of the body that is no wider than the dowel, slaver a dowel in PVA glue and then tap it into position.

Once set, you cut any part of the dowel sticking out off, and sand the edge down.

Why cant you drill from one side to the other? :S I have always done it.... And never had an issue with it.

think the problem is that it would 'deaden' that area, not sure though
