Do I bat or do I bowl?

So out strip is looking the best it had is recent years, however, along with the firmness has come a few cracks.

Looking at out opposition, last year they came up and had a bowler that took 35 league wickets in 117 over at 11. Don't know if he is a seamer or spinner. They also had a couple batsmen that average around 50.

We only use 1 new ball per game, so the options are. Bowl first with a new ball  that might do a bit and then hope the pitch won't do too much with an old ball.

Or bat first, against the new ball and this 35 wicket bowler, then hope that the pitch gets worse and the old ball still does something.

Also looking like there will be a bit of wet around.

What shall I do, or am I reading too much into this as its the first game?

bowl first and chase if you're worried about the one bowler, and think your batting is stronger........... or lose the toss!

Last week we scored 142 on a docile pitch against average bowlers in 30 overs, think batting is stronger than our bowling.



Speaking about being worried about one bowler, I was given a barrage of short balls at North Perrott on Wednesday nigh Nick!

But I would add it also depends on the type of game you're playing. Do you need to bowl the opposition out to win if you bat first? Is a draw a possibility? Can you get bonus points for taking wickets/scoring runs?

It was a T20 against Palmers Brewery, they always get a few ringers, in, gave the splice of my bat a working over, got a couple of hooks away! In the last 3 years I haven't played on a dry wicket there, I knew what it was capable of but was still surprised!

We play 45 overs per side, 1 point for every 2 wickets taken and batting is done 1 point at 90 and then every 20 runs up to 170.

Total of 20 points on offer, 5 batting, 5 bowling and 10 for the winner. Win/Lose/Tie cricket

Yeah mate, its playing alright this year! Bit of a road already, surprising seeing as the rain we've had. Looking forward to first game there tomorrow. We've got Stapleton in the National Village Knockout.

I made the mistake of bowling first last week and chasing was impossible on a damp one with a soft ball. 'Win toss, bat first' will be my next tattoo,

It's pretty simple. Always bat first, unless you think there is a genuine advantage to bowling first. By genuine I mean it's worth 2 or 3 wickets in the conditions. If you are playing on a road and the overhead conditions are good, go and bat. The new ball can go to the boundary just as quickly as the odd ball, sometimes more so. Don't forget the main benefit of batting first is 2nd Innings scoreboard pressure, pile up a decent score and the oppo have to manage the run rate as well as the pitch. As for the oppo, is there a bowler overs limit (ie. 10 overs per bowler), in which case this star bowlers impact will be limited. The batter could get a first baller. You also don't know if both of these star players are even playing. They can't do it by themselves.

It is 12 overs per bowler, we batted first last week and then let the game go in extras.

The vice captain is hell bent on bowling first, I'll have to have a look when I get down there. Batting first was going to be my way this year, but the pitch conditions have put doubt in my mind

In that case bat first. You can control the game then. And if you set a good total you can set the field accordingly, and with an old ball make it hard to score the runs. Build pressure let them get themselves out rather than chase wickets and give away easy runs.

But if you turn up on the day and its a wet green seamer and overcast, then it's a no brainier.
