Joe Gatting
« on: May 31, 2013, 07:03:51 PM »

Having been at the Sussex - Warwickshire game last night. I raised the question of Joe Gatting to some friends, the opinion of the panel was, he is just a spoilt brat, with a lot of opportunities due to who is Dad and Uncle are.

Neither an impressive footballer nor a startling cricket, it is baffling how this guy gets into the Sussex first XI.

Many people would like to play cricket at the level he does or even the level he played football at.

This is obviously an interest to me as its my local club, is this a re-occuring issue across the English Cricket board or is this a one off?

The first rule of regional football is its who you know. If you're average but your name fits you are in.

To be fair, the lad can play: He has 3 first class tons in 34 games, and has scored runs in the previous couple of seasons. There may be better players, but he's not a poor cricketer by any means.

I went to school with Joe, same year, so naturally have followed his career. Most of us that knew him, though weren't really close friends, thought he made a big mistake going into football after knowing how good of a cricketer he was growing up.
And he is certainly not a spoilt brat considering his heritage, of course those connections would have helped him, but Joe has never been overly arrogant about things.

I can't profess to knowing him at all anymore but I would say watching him play he hasn't got his head in the right place at the moment. And as Tumo says I don't think you can doubt his talent.
