batting tips
« on: June 02, 2013, 04:40:01 PM »

Hi there, yesterday I played cricket after few months and I found it extremely difficult to hit over the fielders heads and hit  short balls outside off stump. What should I do to improve ? The captain said that  I have no place in the team  so I want to cover this up quickly.

Yep thats it, unless you could never do it before. In which case you're better off writing a whole load more about why you're struggling and let certain people on here coach you from 100s of miles away.

Make contact earlier! As I said, I have no idea what it is you're doing already and a 2 line post will not help!

To hit over the fielders head, play straight and keep your head down and commit yourself to the shot. And about the short balls outside off stump...for now just let them go.

Unless you play a fairly high standard there is no real need to play over the top.  If you don't middle a drive then if will be safely on the ground but if you don't middle a lofted shot you are in real danger of being caught. You should focus on timing the ball on the ground and watch the singles turn into 4s. You will get enough full pitched bowling that driving should be your main scoring shot. Shorter bowling, if you're not confident you can play it, should be left or blocked because they're unlikely to bowl everything short.

If the captain says you aren't ready to play in the team then you should prove to him that you can score runs sensibly, not try to impress with fancy shots over the top.

A steady 50 will always go down better than a rapid fire 25.
