Retro Gray Nicolls Scoop and Retro BB Baronet
« on: May 31, 2013, 10:58:23 AM »

Good Morning, I thought I'd share a couple of old bats with you that have recently joined my collection. I'll start by talking about the scoop first as that's the one that has most wear and tear. I'm considering sending it back to GN for a refurb or keeping it in its well used (loved) state.

As you can see its got a few surface cracks that possibly could be sanded out and given a good clean up in general. It weighs in at 2.8 with a very thin grip on and is an example of how much more bat you can get for same weight these days. I have not played with it yet but it taps up nicely using a ball. What would you guys do, keep it as it is? Refurb it myself? Send it back to GN for a full refurb inc stickers? Or try and sell it on? If you're interested then make me an offer.

The next one I believe is a Double B bat made my Bernie Facer? If that's wrong then please let me know as I know very little about this bat. If it is then I may take it to Hawk as I know he joined up with them before retiring. Here's the pics

This bat in my opinion has a lovely profile and again although it hasn't be used properly it tapped up nicely. The reason it's lighter at the bottom is because I removed the tape that was wrapped on it. It came of much easier than I was expecting and has not left any sticky residue which I was surprised by. It weighs in at 2.7 again with a very thin grip and has a pretty clean face albeit dirty with a few very small surface cracks and one crack that runs up a grain but doesn't appear to go through the back or toe. If you know anything about the BB Baronet then I'd love to hear about it. Again if you like what you are then make me an offer.

BB bats were made by Bernie Facer, who back in the 70s worked for County Bats, and then set up on his own. More recently he was helping Hawk bats.

An ex colleague, and his son,  once went to Bernie's workshop where they made themselves bats with Bernie's assistance.

Hi bud and welcome to the forums

If you want to keep it, I strongly encourage you to send it to GN for refurb, they do great work - http://www.gray-nicolls.co.uk/bat-repairs

Cheers I thought it was a Bernie Facer bat, I guess that puts these bats from the 80's? It's certainly interesting comparing these more traditional bats with modern ones. I wonder what bats will be like on 20/30 years time or have we reached the peak of bat making?

The scoop is certainly mid 80s; the gold trim on the labels was introduced in 84, and by 88/89 all GN bats had the twin horizontal bands around the splice as well as the red GN labels.
