Glenn Maxwell
« on: June 04, 2013, 10:22:00 AM »

Amazing that some players can make it so far in the game by having such an average record in club cricket.

Taken from the BBC website they have pinned him as being the one to watch in the CT for Australia because he's spent time in England before.

Taking a look at his club cricket record over here its nothing to shout home about!

How do you from this to playing test cricket within 12 months? Is it just having the lucky breaks or has he simply just improved so much?

Steve Smith.  Going at well over 4 an over averaging 28 with the ball, to being Australia's lead spin bowler in India two years later?

Steve Smith playing 2s cricket... 10 overs for 72, ouch!

I suppose the 185 made up for it.  I guess it must have been a bit of a road...

Maxwell is rubbish. I think he was earmarked as someone with potential, and after a couple of okay (I stress the okay part) seasons in the Big Bash he was thrust into the limited overs stuff last summer. That somehow led to him being picked for India and actually playing; the thinking there being he bowls off spin and India is spin friendly, and can supposedly bat a bit. He's another of these players who can do a bit of everything without actually being great at any one thing. I look at a guy like Dernbach for England and scratch my head - Maxwell is in the same bracket.

I'd put him more in the bracket with Chris Woakes, average at both (at best). Dernbach you can't even claim is average at one discipline!

Yep, just like Woakes, in that he's neither a frontline bat or bowler. But in Dernbach's bracket also for the 'WTF is he doing playing international cricket?' factor.

Is there is an element of it not being a 'like for like' comparison, do you think?

Oh and my thoughts on Maxwell...if they have a place for a professional fielder then maybe that's why he is in??? Other than that his abilities are rather goatish.

Played at the Vine a few times, lovely ground and yes its notorious for being a road. When ive played there its been towards one end of the square which makes one boundary pretty small - if i can clear it with ease then im sure steve smith wouldnt struggle

i believe he also got called up and played some Kent 2nd XI stuff that year
