Why are bats so big now
« on: June 17, 2013, 11:43:24 AM »

Hi guys,
When I first started playing in the 90's bats were much more thinner in side profile than they are now .Why is that , I actually prefer the thinner bats , I think they are much better for placement.I think the 50 cent edges are way over the top !

bat's are pressed differently, much lighter, and as such less wood is condensed in the pressing process giving bigger bats in general (I'll wait for somebody to correct me on this!). Bats are more concaved on the back, allowing the edge profile to be bigger. Add in CAD design/new types of shaping (L&W / some of the GM's) and you have most of the reasons there. Oh, moisture content is probably a bit lower as well, maybe a couple of % making the bat weigh less.

This Thursday, a couple of forumites will be testing whether bat dimensions really make a difference when we take two identically weighted bats into a net, one that is made from a much denser cleft and therefore has a smaller profile... Should be interesting!

This explains how the bat shape has developed and how there are now more concaving evident in bats, which effects the edge size, definately worth a read.

The edges of my bat take a beating, the middle is near enough new.
